War and Pestilence

These are paintings that depict 2 of the 4 Horsemen traits for Heavy Metal Magazine’s Four Horsemen of the Apocolypse competition. One depicts War, showing a devil staring outward while wielding an axe, with Peace trying to seduce him without success. the other is Pestilence, this depiction is of someone being consumed by a disease spread by giant mosquitoes.  Pestilence is featured in the September 2012 issue of Heavy Metal.

I designed the War painting after an advertising campaign that Arrow shirts ran in the 20’s and 30’s. Here is a hi-resolution of the War painting. My thoughts on how to depict War was to show him as uncaring and unemotional, with peace trying to seduce him. This is the initial sketch of the concept that led me right into the painting. Here is the painting coming along, I usually transfer my sketch to a wet canvas so you can see the outlines of War beside the near finished Peace. Finally, here is a close-up of the two faces. This painting, like Pestilence, is 18x24in canvas.

Pestilence was the first painting I created for the Heavy Metal contest. I only had a few days to complete it, so I went straight from a thumbnail sketch to photography. Here is a hi-resolution of the Pestilence painting. I painted using a direct photo source and I began painting by using the same reductive method as the War painting. I had hurried along with this painting, turning it around in about 3 days for the deadline. I am happy with the result and it gave me more time to focus on the war painting.

Both paintings were featured in the Maleficium Dark Art Exhibit for the 2nd annual showing.
